Issues

As your County Commissioner, I will be committed to making these issues a priority:

Crime Reduction

I will get crime reduced in our county and in our precinct so that residents can feel safe in their homes, at the shopping centers, and at the recreation sites.  We need to take advantage of the available geographical information systems and crime analysis statistics to stay ahead of the criminals. We need to put our law enforcement forces in the target areas before the criminals get there and nab them in their tracks.  We can do this with the right tools and the right will.

Transportation Solutions

I will strive for new and diverse transportation solutions available to our citizens.  New toll roads are not enough when we expect growth of over one million new residents in the county over the next decade.  We need to find and exploit options which reduce the carbon footprint in our city.  We need to look at light rail, commuter rail, and dedicated two wheeled vehicle lanes.  We need to find ways to put these options in place without affecting our progressive communities.

Flood Control and Crisis Management Responsibility

I will strive for clear lines of responsibility established for flood control of the neighborhoods in the County Precinct .  Too many homes and too much property are at risk because the flood maps are inconsistent.  Too much property is lost every time a storm drainage area clogs and floods our streets.  Too many lives were lost because the county does not have a comprehensive crisis management plan for transportation and evacuation in the event of hurricanes, floods, and other environmental disasters.  We need to protect our citizens’ lives and property.

The technologies are available to get us there.  We need to use the county’s brain trust to tap into these resources; Resources like Unmanned Aerospace Vehicles to monitor and assist in traffic control, disaster response, and evacuation management; Resources like the Internet to integrate our city, county, state, and federal communications and geographical information systems, and to identify and stop crime before it grows; And further use of those resources to identify subdivisions of our communities with at-risk youth so we can pinpoint the right fixes to the right problems.

Technology Support

I will get better communications and 21st Century coordinating systems in place between City and County First Responders.  We need to ensure that our County Sheriffs Department is synchronized with our Constable Force and our Metropolitan Police Forces.  That means near real time visibility of the crime statistics, trends, and patterns, and the tools to counter the criminal intent.  It means integrating communications systems which allow the three forces to communicate seamlessly – especially when criminals cross boundaries that only exist in law enforcement.  That also means a county wide law enforcement force that is manned, equipped and empowered to protect our citizens.
